Tongue is a small village and community on the far north of Scotland, between Bettyhill and Durness. The village overlooks the outstandingly beautiful Kyle of Tongue.
Tongue has hotels, Hostel, bed and breakfast and other accommodation available. It is an ideal location to explore the far north as you are just over an hour's drive to Durness (West) and Thurso / John O'Groats and Castle of Mey to the east.

Varrich Castle is believed to be over 1000 years old, probably built on the site of an old Norse Castle. It was the ancient seat of the Clan Mackay. The castle can be seen from the village of Tongue and their is a path/walk to the castle from the village.

The causeway was built in 70's and connects Tongue to the west coast road to Durness.
Durness is the most north westerly village on the British mainland. It has a golf course, several gorgeous sandy beaches, lochs and Smoo cave, as well as being close to the passenger ferry to Cape Wrath.

Durness is also famous for the most northerly golf course on the British mainland.


A popular tourist attraction is Smoo Cave and you can go inside the cave for free to see the waterfall, and for the adventurous you can take a journey through the underground lake to deeper caves.

Balnakeil Village is an artist community famous for unique crafts and artistic studios. There is also a coffee shop selling great fairtrade coffee and home made chocolate truffles, as well as other cafe's open for lunches and snacks. Balnakeil is just a short distance from Durness village.

Cape Wrath is the most north-westerly point in the UK mainland. You get to Cape Wrath you need to cross the Kyle of Durness by passenger ferry from Keoldale Pier and then take a minibus to Cape Wrath.

On your arrival at Tongue from the east on the A836 you will see the war memorial on the left.

Picture taken of the Kyle of Tongue, and our dog Charlie. When the tide is out you can walk over the sandy bay for miles.

Tongue has a number of hotels including the Tongue hotel which is open for coffees, lunches and dinner.

Tongue has an enviable position with outstanding scenery. You will often see buzzards and eagles flying overhead as well as other wildlife including otters and deer.
Durness for beautiful sandy beaches, fishing, golf, visitors attractions including Smoo cave and the craft village of Balnakeil.
