The Scottish Highlands covers a vast area of Scotland and we consider areas just above the Perth and Dundee to be in the Highlands. The areas normally considered to be the Scottish Highlands include the Cairngorms, Inverness, Ross and Cromerty and the far north - Caithness and Sutherland. The Highlands of Scotland are loved for the wild open spaces, mountains and coastal areas, with scenic rivers, valleys and lochs. There is also a vast amount of historical locations, with castles, brochs, standing stones and abandoned villages to be discovered and explored. The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland own and manage many buildings, gardens and nature reserves open to the public. You will also find other privately owned castles and historic buildings / gardens that are open for visitors. The entrance charges vary and in most cases are used to help preserve these properties for everyone to enjoy.
