In 1996 The Queen Mother made the property and the farm over to the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, which opened the castle and garden to the public. It is now open seven days a week from mid May until the end of September each year.

The castle is closed when Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay visit the county of Caithness, usually at the end of July for around 10 days, and stay at the Castle of Mey. During this time the castle is closed to the public.

The Visitors Centre has a gift shop and restaurant. The Castle of Mey also has an Animal Centre and children's farm where you can learn about the working farm as well as seeing a range of smaller animals including goats, chickens, ducks and usually pigs.

The gardens at the castle are both ornamental and productive with a wide range of vegetables and fruit being grown in the walled garden and glasshouses. The garden is superb and is an excellent example of how a protective walled garden can be used to grow ornamental plants in what is probably one of the most inhospitable gardening environments in the north of Scotland.

We highly recommend visiting the Castle of Mey and Gardens as well as the restaurant.

Please visit the official website www.castleofmey.org.uk for more information on visiting and opening dates.
