Calton Hill
Calton Hill is at the east end of Princes Street and at 355 feet above sea level offers invigorating exercise to walk to the top of the hill where you get one of the best panoramic views over Edinburgh. These views are enhanced from the top of the Nelson Monument which is open most of the year with a small entrance charge. The Nelson monument was built as a monument to Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory and death at the battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805 and was built between 1807 and 1815, the design was based on Nelson’s telescope. After climbing the spiral staircase (143 steps) you will experience even better views over Edinburgh, Midlothian coastline and the opposite coast across the Firth of Forth to Fife and the Bass Rock. You can also see the Forth Road Bridge and Rail Bridge from Calton Hill.
Calton Hill has a number of other structures and buildings including the City Observatory, Nelson’s Monument, and National Monument. Also situated nearby are some of Edinburgh’s finest hotels.

Scotland's National Monument to the fallen of the Napoleonic War. Money on building the monument ran out and it was never completed. It remains as it was built in 1829.
