Durness is located in the far north of the Scottish Highlands. The area is surrounded by un spoilt wild landscapes, wildlife and some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland.
This area is a must to explore to discover the Scottish Highlands, including Cape Wrath, Smoo Cave along with the craft village and more in Durness.
You are also close to Tongue with its historic Varrich Castle and the beautiful Kyle of Tongue.

The campsite and Durness village overlook sandy beaches with unusual rock formations.
Durness is also famous for the most northerly golf course on the British mainland.

The golf course is open to the public and a weekly ticket is great value for playing one of the most attractive golf courses in the UK.

One of the most popular tourist attractions is Smoo Cave. You can go inside the cave for free to see the waterfall, however if you want to explore the underground cave further you need to take a small underground ferry through the caves, the cost is only a couple of pounds and is well worth it for the adventure.

Balnakeil Village was an army camp in the second World War and is now an artist community famous the world over. You can find many unique crafts and artistic studios in the village which is just outside Durness. There is also a great coffee shop selling fairtrade coffee and home made chocolate truffles, as well as cafe's open for lunches and snacks.

Cape Wrath is the most north-westerly point in the UK mainland. You get to Cape Wrath you need to cross the Kyle of Durness by passenger ferry from Keoldale Pier and then take a minibus to Cape Wrath, or you can walk or cycle. You can take the minibus to the Cape then walk back if you feel fit enough for the adventure.

View over the Kyle of Durness.
Durness is also part of the NW Highlands Geopark that starts at the Summer Isles in Wester Ross up to Durness and over towards Loch Eriboll.

View over beach towards Whiten Head. Parking is available next to this beach which is a short distance (3 miles) from Durness.

Smoo Cave can be visited for free. A small charge is made if you want to take an underground trip through the caves in a rubber dingy.

Lochs, hills and mountains are all found in abundance in the Scottish Highlands area around Durness.

Sutherland has outstanding areas of scenic beauty and this view of the Kyle of Durness is one of my favourites. While it does take some time and planning to visit Scotland's most northerly areas it is definately worth it as you will discover unspoilt areas inhabited by wild deer, golden eagles and in the sea dolphins, whales, sea otters and seals.
Tongue for mountains, Ben Hope and Ben Loyal, hotels, hostel, gift shops and the Kyle of Tongue, causeway and picnic areas.

Croit-Na-Mara cottage sleeps 4 in two bedrooms and is located in Tongue, Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands.

Burnside Croft sleeps 2 in one bedroom. The croft is situated close to a stony beach at Portvasgo, Tongue. This is a location you must explore if you want to relax and enjoy nature's beauty and peace and quiet in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland.
